Initially when we made our flooring selection I convinced myself that I wanted to upgrade the carpet padding in the basement and the upper floor (the main floor will have no carpeting) but I'm starting to reconsider. Perhaps it's not needed? We didn't upgrade to the fullest padding - we went with the 8lb admiral. The included is 5lb. How many of you wonderful blogger pals upgraded your padding? What were your reasons? If your build is done, do you regret your decision?
I'm beginning to feel so wishwashy! I'm just trying to squeeze things into the budget or out of it lol. I'm wondering how many change orders are too many? Our SR hates me, I just know it! :(
This blog is all about building a home with Ryan Homes and NVR. The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about the amazing journey of building our first home. This is hoped to be a honest collection of the process, pictures, questions, problems, and solutions throughout the entire process of building our very first home and the bliss of the after. And here we go! We're so very excited!! Please bear with me as I make continual improvements to this blog. :)

We have a level one carpet. We upgraded to six lb padding on the first and second floors, but we went with the eight lb in the basement to keep it warmer. I wish we would have used the eight lb throughout. It just feels so much softer underfoot. If you can afford it, I would keep the upgraded padding.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your honesty! I think we're keeping the upgrade.
DeleteI have no house yet, but I upgraded to 8 lb throughout the whole house. I guess my reasoning was that it wasn't really that much more money (I had an expectation of it being a lot more). And I think by going to the upgraded padding, it will help the carpet to last longer. The carpet I selected was a level one upgrade.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense. Maybe our upgraded padding will help our base-level feel better but not hurt our pocket book as much as upgrading the carpet.
DeleteWe went with the highest upgrade on the main floor with and the 8 lb padding on the upper floor with level C carpet on both floors. We originally had the 8 lb padding on the stairs, but they had to pull the carpet up because of some bunched up spots and it turned out that the padding was cut too short. We ended up with free upgraded padding for the stairs and it made a huge difference!
ReplyDeleteCan you feel the difference between the 8 and highest? Was the highest 10?
DeleteFor us, the 8lbs padding had moisture protection to prevent moisture from reaching the padding layer and floor boards. We only had an option of 8 or 10 lbs padding. This made it worth it since we have an elementary schooler. We did debate going with the 10 lbs in the basement, but we ultimately chose another last minute, expensive upgrade/option instead.
ReplyDeleteI've heard all kinds of recommendations on going with at least 8 lbs for the basement because of the concrete. That's where we initially went with the 8, then I thought if we're not upgrading the carpet maybe we can make it feel higher quality by adding the upgraded pad.
DeleteWe upgraded our padding because we don't plan on replacing our carpet/padding for a while (and want it to last as long as possible). We have a baby and plan on having another so if we are going to make a change it will be probably in 10 or so years once they are less accident prone.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are older - and are still very accident prone! LOL, at least they've learned things must be cleaned up very quickly now though. We still opted out of carpet on the main level because of "traffic" concerns. I have 2 boys and they are not very aware of the icky they bring in on their feet, and are very clumsy!
